The Season of Lent
Lent is a forty-day period for prayer and spiritual self-examination that helps prepare us for the festival of the Resurrection, also called “Easter.” This year Easter is held on Sunday, April 21st. This forty-day period, which begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6th, does not include Sundays, as these “Lord’s Days” are meant to be viewed as weekly celebrations of the resurrection.
In keeping with our theme this year at Trinity of “Mountains and Valleys” during Lent we will be focusing on the fact that we literally live in a valley here in Western, Massachusetts, the “Pioneer Valley.” Throughout the season we’ll be looking at different scripture readings, songs, anthems and other liturgical expressions that speak about being “in the valley.” Sometimes the valley image can viewed in a very positive way, for valleys can be places of rich, fertile land; of growth and nourishment. At other times, however, valleys can have a more negative connotation. For example valleys’ can be seen as “low points” or challenging times in our journey of life. Songs like “Jesus Walked this Lonesome Valley” come to mind and are especially appropriate during the season of Lent.
Each week during worship in Lent we will also have a special insert that will invite us to reflect upon living in a valley. We may learn some new and interesting things about this place we call “home.” It is indeed a special place to which we have been called to be the church.
In addition, during the season of Lent Trinity Church offers Friday, mid-day services from 12:30 – 1:00 PM in Grace Chapel. These services are held at the end of our “Lenten Lunches” and are led by different members of our congregation. One member will offer a reflection and prayers and the other will sing a solo. This year, these services will be focusing on the familiar 23rdPsalm, specifically the verse which states “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.” (Psalm 23:4) More detailed information is available on our Lenten Luncheons page.
